We successfully hosted the inaugural Malaysia MPL (Medennium Phakic Lens) User Group Meeting, bringing together over 20 leading corneal and refractive surgeons from public institutions and private sectors such as UIA, UKM, Optimax, ISEC, and Vista. The event served as a platform to share nearly one year of collective experience with MPL implantable phakic lens in Malaysia.
The meeting commenced with an opening address by A/Prof Khairidzan from UIA, followed by special keynote presentations by A/Prof. Dr. Wan Haslina from UKM and Mr. Cattai from Milan. The CEO of Medennium, Sid, also delivered an insightful talk on his journey into refractive technology and the unique challenge MPL technology providing an intraocular implant solution for myopia without tissue removal.
Key Highlights:
• Clinical Observations by A/Prof. Dr. Wan Haslina: Prof. Dr. Wan shared her clinical experience with MPL implantation in approximately 30 patients, detailing post-operative observations from the day before surgery to 35 days after surgery. Remarkably, there were no reports of dissatisfaction among patients, underscoring MPL’s efficacy and safety.• Unique Case Presentation by Mr. Cattai: Mr. Cattai presented a compelling case involving a 30-year-old patient who experienced vision issues after a chiropractic ocular massage, four years post-MPL implantation. Examination revealed traumatic MpL lens displacement with pupil size changes. The lens was successfully removed via a 2.4mm small incision without damage, demonstrating MPL’s material durability.
• Remarks by Sid, CEO of Medennium: Sid emphasized the importance of collaboration across professionals and institutions in addressing the growing myopia epidemic.
